Russian investigators should decide on Ukrainian ombudsman's request for sailors' release before end of August - lawyer

MOSCOW. Aug 16 (Interfax) - The defense team for the Ukrainian sailors who were arrested after an incident in the Kerch Strait in the fall of 2018 hopes that a decision on a petition lodged by Ukrainian human rights commissioner Liudmyla Denisova will be made before the end of August.

"The investigation is considering Denisova's petition according to standard procedure. In other words, within a month, since she isn't a party to this case. That means a decision will made before August 26," Nikolai Polozov, the coordinator of the Ukrainian sailors' legal team, told reporters after a Moscow City Court session on Friday.

Denisova earlier forwarded a request to Russian investigators via the Foreign Ministry to release the arrested sailors under her personal guarantee, vowing that they would take part in all court sessions in accordance with Russian legislation.
