Russian charge d'affaires to UN: problems linked with U.S. withdrawal from INF Treaty must be resolved today

NEW YORK (UN). Aug 23 (Interfax) - Problems related to the United States withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty need to be resolved today, and Russia is ready for such dialogue, Russian Charge d'Affaires Dmitry Polyansky said at a UN Security Council meeting.

"However, we're still realistic. It's easier to pull things apart than to build up. As history has shown, it can take years, if not decades, to launch a more or less sustainable and effective new format for discussing issues of strategic stability and arms control. However, there are problems, including those arising from irresponsible actions of Washington, that must be resolved today," he said.

"For our part, we [Russia] have always been ready for any serious dialogue aimed at ensuring strategic stability and security," he said.

"We still believe that common sense and the instinct of self-preservation will eventually dominate in our Western partners. After all, the very existence of humankind is at stake," the Russian diplomat said.

"And if it were just up to us, we would never have come to such a dangerous line that the world is approaching now," he said.
