Militants in Syria's Idlib de-escalation area attack 14 localities in one day - Russian military

HMEIMIM (Syria). Aug 23 (Interfax) - Illegal armed units active in Syria's Idlib de-escalation area mounted more than 30 attacks on August 21, the head of the Russian center for reconciliation of the opposing sides in Syria, Maj. Gen. Alexei Bakin, said at a press briefing on Thursday.

"Thirty-one attacks were observed on August 21. Militants from illegal armed formations attacked the populated localities of Binyamin, Aleppol, Sabiqiya, and Khalasa in the Aleppo region; Ain al-Kantara, Saraf, Sanjeka, Chukurjak, Kalaat Marza, Ardash Dag, and Kermel in the Latakia region; Al-Wasita and Al-Salihiyah in the Idlib region; Tel Metwazi in the Hama region," Bakin said.

The Russian center for reconciliation is calling on the commander of the illegal armed units to renounce armed provocations and join efforts aimed at peacefully settling the situation in the districts under their control, he said.

"The Syrian government has opened a humanitarian passage and the Suran crossing point in the Hama region to facilitate the voluntary and unhindered exit of civilians and militants willing to lay down their arms from the Idlib de-escalation area. People leaving the territory controlled by illegal armed formations are being provided with emergency medical aid, drinking water, hot meals, medications, and essential items. Vehicles are being arranged to transport people to safe areas," Bakin said.
