MOSCOW. Aug 23 (Interfax) - Suspected U.S. spy Paul Whelan sustained his trauma while being transferred from one cell in the Lefortovo detention facility to another, Whelan's lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov told Interfax.
"Whelan asked the facility's administration to be transferred to another cell. His request was granted, and he suffered pain caused by inguinal hernia on August 9, when he was carrying his belongings to the new cell," Zherebenkov said.
Whelan is receiving all necessary medical assistance, he said.
Conditions were worse in Whelan's former cell: there was no radio service, and the TV signal was poor, Zherebenkov said.
"His new cell has better conditions," he said.
The Moscow Lefortovsky District Court is hearing the request to extend Whelan's arrest until October 29.
Whelan told the court he had sustained trauma because of the Lefortovo guards and was "in severe pain." He also said he was receiving therapy and taking medicine for his condition.
