MOSCOW. Aug 23 (Interfax) - The defense team of U.S. citizen Paul Whelan charged with espionage has interpreted the results of the examinations and the latest investigative actions in its favor.
"I cannot tell you everything, but the latest investigative and procedural actions, as well as expert examinations, are to the advantage of the defense to a larger extent. The evidence seems to support Paul's entrapment theory, that is our point of view, but the investigation believes that's not the case," Whelan's lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov said following a hearing at the Lefortovsky District Court of Moscow on Friday.
The defense team has not yet seen the prosecution's evidence, but "in any case, and the current stage, the prosecution's evidence is more flawed than it was in the beginning," he said.
The court sanctioned the extension of Whelan's arrest until October 29 earlier on Friday.
