U.S. diplomats asking for urgent meeting with suspected spy Whelan over health complaints

MOSCOW. Aug 23 (Interfax) - The United States embassy to Russia has asked for urgent consular access to Paul Whelan, a U.S. citizen accused of spying against Russia, over his health complaints.

"We've asked the Russian Foreign Ministry for immediate consular access to meet with Paul Whelan to speak with him about his serious health allegations," the embassy said in a tweet on Friday.

"The health and welfare of U.S. citizens abroad is our highest priority," it said.
