Moscow condemns Washington's attempts to thwart Damascus fair

MOSCOW. Aug 27 (Interfax) - Washington's attempts to obstruct the plans of Damascus to host an international fair run counter to the international community's decisions on Syria, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary published on its website on Tuesday.

"We see the United States' continuing overt blocking of the Syrian leadership's efforts related to the country's post-crisis rebuilding as something which is detrimental to the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and directly contradicts the letter and spirit of the international community's decisions on Syria, including UN Security Council Resolution 2254," the ministry said.

"The U.S. embassy to Syria has been posting calls one after another on its website since August 22 not to visit the Damascus fair, threatening sanctions from the U.S. Treasury Department," it said.

At the same time, Washington "is strongly encouraging other countries to extend large-scale financial assistance for the development of the territories under its control in the northeast of Syria," the ministry said.
