World needs ironclad mechanisms to ensure nuclear non-proliferation - Nazarbayev

NUR-SULTAN. Aug 29 (Interfax) - The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) should be fortified with ironclad mechanisms and resolutions of the UN Security Council aimed to prevent proliferation of nuclear weapons, First President of Kazakhstan and Leader of the Nation Nursultan Nazarbayev said on Thursday.

"The world needs a working mechanism of strict measures against the possession and proliferation of nuclear weapons," Nazarbayev said at the Nuclear-Weapons-Free World and Global Security Award ceremony in Nur-Sultan.

"There is a treaty adopted at the UN Headquarters [the NPT]. Still, India and Pakistan became nuclear powers after that happened. What does it matter that all of us have backed this treaty? This is why an ironclad mechanism should be supported with relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council," Nazarbayev said.

The Nazarbayev Award for a Nuclear-Weapons-Free World and Global Security was bestowed in 2019 on late IAEA General Director Yukiya Amano and Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo.

The ceremony was timed to coincide with the International Day Against Nuclear Tests (established by the UN in 2009) and the Day of Closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Range.
