Russian, Singaporean top security officials discuss counterterrorism fight

MOSCOW. Aug 30 (Interfax) - Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev has attended Russian-Singaporean security consultations in Singapore, the Russian Security Council's press service said.

"The sides discussed prospects of interaction between the Security Councils, including within the Russia-ASEAN partnership, military and military-technical cooperation, and joint efforts to counter international terrorism, drug trafficking, organized crime, and extremism," the press service said.

They gave special attention to the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, it said.

Patrushev and Singapore's Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean chaired the consultations, which also involved representatives of the two countries' law enforcement agencies, military agencies and special services. Singapore's Second Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Human Resources Josephine Teo attended the consultations as well.

Patrushev said at the consultations that Russia sees Singapore as an important and promising partner in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region as a whole.

"We have confirmed the similarity of our approaches to a wide variety of key problems on the global and regional agenda, including steps to maintain strategic stability and our equal partnership in the context of the multipolar world," the press service quoted Patrushev as saying.

The two countries' mutual commitment to further boosting their cooperation in a wide range of areas was confirmed during the Russian president's state visit to Singapore, he said.

At the end of the consultations, representatives of the Russian Interior Ministry and Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs signed a memorandum of cooperation.
