KYIV. Sept 11 (Interfax) - Six explosions and thick smoke were recorded at around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday on the technological ground of the military ammunition depot in Kalynivka, the Vinnytsia region, where unexploded shells are scattered, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said.
"Six explosions were recorded in the area, [which was] covered with smoke. These were from munitions stockpiled in one place for further disposal. [...] Tentatively, the smoke was caused by the burning of about two hectares of dried grass. There is no threat to servicemen or civilians, and no casualties have been reported. The situation is under control," the Defense Ministry's press service said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
Specialists from the State Emergency Situations Service, the National Police, and the Ukrainian Military Law-Enforcement Service are currently working in the arsenal's territory, it said.
A response team led by the first deputy head of the Ukrainian General Staff has departed for the site, the statement said.
"Efforts to contain the fire are under way," it said.
The fire was stopped from spreading over ammunition depots, the press service of the Vinnytsia regional National Police office said.
"At this point, emergency services are controlling the situation. The fire was contained near the depots. Road traffic has been temporarily restricted near the military base," the regional police headquarters said on Facebook.
Police officers are asking people not to panic and warning members of the public from spreading unreliable information.
