Chisinau not to review agreements with EU, NATO - foreign minister

MOSCOW. Sept 12 (Interfax) - Chisinau will adhere to its foreign policy principles and will not review its agreements with the European Union and NATO, as well as its participation in the free trade zone with the CIS, Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu said.

"Our partnership in the parliament is based on several principles. One of the most important principles is that Moldova will not review the principles some of which have been in the foundation of our foreign policy for years and others for decades," Popescu said at a meeting with Russian Federation Council Foreign Affairs Committee head Konstantin Kosachyov in Moscow on Wednesday.

"This non-revision of the previous agreements and principles implies the non-revision of our Association Agreement with the European Union, non-revision of our participation in the CIS free trade area, and non-revision and continuation of our cooperation with NATO under an individual action plan, but taking into consideration our neutrality as a state," he said.

In its relations with Russia, Moldova will continue to insist "on the need to remove the Russian troops and weapons from Transdniestria," Popescu said. "Our message and our program in relations with Russia is normalization, but the basics that all governments of the Republic of Moldova have adhered to for almost 30 years remain in place," Popescu said.

"We see how complicated Russia's relations with the U.S., the European Union, and some other countries are. But it just turned out in our case that the current parliamentary majority enjoys unconditional political and economic support from all foreign actors," he said.
