MOSCOW. Sept 12 (Interfax) - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Acting Director General Cornel Feruta in Vienna on Wednesday.
"The parties had a substantive exchange of opinions on key areas of the IAEA's activities, including the elections of the Agency's new director general," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Russian Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said last week that four candidates would compete for the office of IAEA director general, which has been vacant since July.
"Deadline for nomination of candidates for the position of IAEA Director General has passed. Four persons will be running for this post. All of them are good professionals and we know them well," Ulyanov wrote on Twitter last Friday.
"The candidates for the position of IAEA Director General are: PermRep of Argentina to int. Organizations in Vienna Rafael Grossi, Executive Secretary of CTBTO Prepcom Lassina Zerbo, head of Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority Marta Ziakova, acting IAEA DG Cornel Feruta," Ulyanov said.
Yukiya Amano, who had served as IAEA director general since 2009, died in July 2019.
The IAEA Board of Governors is authorized to appoint the agency's director general, after which he or she is to be endorsed by the General Conference representing all member states.
