Russian military to receive Tor air defense systems worth 100 bln rubles

IZHEVSK. Sept 20 (Interfax) - The Russian Defense Ministry and the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol have signed a long-term contract for delivery of the Tor-M2 and Tor-M2DT surface-to-air missile systems.

The document was signed in the presence of President Vladimir Putin, who is visiting Izhevsk on the national professional day of arms maker's.

The contract is worth around 100 bilion rubles, Putin said earlier at a meeting of the Military-Industrial Commission.

"After this meeting of the [Military-Industrial] Commission, there will be yet another important event: the Izhevsk-based Kupol plant and the Defense Ministry will sign two long-term contracts worth a total of nearly 100 billion rubles," he said.

"Under [these contracts], Tor-M2 and Tor-M2DT systems are to be manufactured and delivered to divisions in 2019-2027," Putin said.

"Implementation of these contracts will strengthen the enterprises' positions and be an important contribution in arming Russia's Aerospace Forces with new types of weapon," he said.

Kupol (part of Almaz-Antey Concern) specializes in manufacturing Tor-M2 systems, onboard apparatus for surface-to-air missiles, and upgrading the Osa-AKM and Tor-M1 SAM systems, as well as providing post-sale service.

The short-range air defense missile system Tor-M2 has been in service in the Russian Ground Forces since 2015. It is intended for air defense and missile defense within a range of up to 15 kilometers and at altitudes of up to 10,000 meters. The system also has an Arctic variant, the Tor-M2DT.

Northern Fleet Commander Alexander Moiseyev said in June that the first Arctic Tors had arrived.
