Russian sailors earlier captured by pirates off Cameroon released, now staying in Germany

MOSCOW. Sept 23 (Interfax) - The Russian embassy in Cameroon has confirmed the information that the Russian sailors captured by pirates off Cameroon's Douala have been released.

"The Russian sailors captured by pirates off the coast of Cameroon on August 15, 2019 have been released. The employer company has confirmed this information," the Russian embassy in Cameroon said in a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday.

"Nothing is threatening the lives or the health of the Russian nationals. Presently, they are in Germany and will go to their home country soon," the Russian embassy said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said later that the three Russian sailors will fly back home on Monday.

"The Russian sailors are expected to go back home on September 23," the ministry said.

"Three sailors who are citizens of the Russian Federation arrived in Germany on September 22 following their release after being captured by pirates in mid-August," the ministry said.

"The information available to the Russian embassies to Cameroon and Germany indicates that the sailors are feeling well. Nothing is threatening their health," it said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said earlier that the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Marmalaita cargo ship had been attacked and seized by unidentified pirates off the Douala port in Cameroon on August 15. The ship belongs to the Danish company Ultrabulk. The attackers captured eight crewmembers, among them three Russian citizens.
