Russia's Smerch ship tests Osa-MA air defense system

VLADIVOSTOK. Sept 26 (Interfax) - The Smerch, a modernized small missile ship of Russia's Pacific Fleet, has conducted a series of missile launches and artillery fire at naval and aerial targets during the final stage of the shipyard tests in the Sea of Japan, the fleet's press service said.

The tests involved firing two missiles from the state-of-the-art Osa-MA air defense missile system. The missile successfully hit air-dropped parachute targets, the press service said in a statement.

The Smerch also fired its new universal 76-mm AK-176MA automatic cannon and 30-mm AK-630 six-barrel automatic ship artillery system.

The Northeastern Repair Center in Kamchatka and the Dalzavod shipyard in Vladivostok backfitted and upgraded the Smerch. The ship received the Uran anti-ship cruise missile system to replace the Malakhit missile system, as well as new artillery.
