MOSCOW. Oct 2 (Interfax) - The United States government is dealing with the case of Paul Whelan, the U.S. citizen who was arrested last year in Russia on spying charges "at very high levels," U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman said.
"The government is raising this case at very high levels," Huntsman told journalists after visiting Whelan at a detention facility on Wednesday.
A joint statement on the Paul Whelan case made by the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate was "a pretty extraordinary measure," he said.
"The work continues at very senior levels," he said.
Huntsman did not say whether he planned to discuss the Whelan case with the U.S. president.
