Some 8,000 servicemen take part anti-landing exercise in Sakhalin, Primorye

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. Oct 14 (Interfax) - Three training ranges in the Primorye Territory and in the Sakhalin region are hosting a large-scale anti-landing tactical exercise, the press service for Russia's Eastern Military District said in a statement on Monday.

The military units deployed on the Kuril Islands are also involved in the exercise. The exercise involves up to 8,000 troops, over 3,000 weapons and military hardware, and up to 50 planes and helicopters the press service said in a statement.

"Units of the Primorye formation and the army corps will drill landing on the coast and counter-landing tasks during the exercise. The exercise's main stage will take place on the Uspenovsky training range in the Sakhalin region," the statement said.

Motorized infantry and tank units will use T-80, BMP-2, mortars, RPG-7V and AGS-17 grenade launchers, 152-mm Giatsint self-propelled cannons, Msta-S self-propelled howitzers and Grad multiple rocket launchers to repel the landing operation, it said. Orlan-10 drones will facilitate adjustment of fire, it said.

Sukhoi Su-30SM fighters, Su-25SM ground attack aircraft, Su-24M2 bombers, Mil Mi-8AMTSh Terminator will provide air support for the operation. Su-24MR aircraft will fly air reconnaissance missions, it said.

Some units of the Primorye formation will be redeployed from their permanent bases to the Sakhalin region for the exercise, it said.
