BELGRADE. Oct 14 (Interfax) - Dismantlement of the Iran nuclear deal will exacerbate the turbulent situation in the region, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said at a meeting with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani on the sidelines of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly session in Belgrade.
"We believe that dismantlement of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which promotes a settlement of the nuclear problem, will further escalate the turbulent situation in the region," Matviyenko said.
She said that Russia raised categorical objections to dismantlement of the deal (when the United States declared its wish to quit) and warned that the move was inadmissible because it would have serious implications.
"The Russian president explained our stance to the U.S. president and leaders of European nations, called against destroying the nuclear deal, and urged the beginning of dialogue. There were no grounds whatsoever to withdraw from the deal, because Iran was honoring every provision of the agreement and that was regularly confirmed by the IAEA," Matviyenko said.
Larijani, in turn, called for building trust between chiefs of state, especially in the light of the "not quite normal behavior demonstrated by Donald Trump."
"I believe time has come for leaders to have more trust in each other. I am sure we can restructure and change what has been destroyed as a result of Donald Trump's actions," Larijani said.
"Significant progress has been made lately in economic and energy cooperation," he said.
