Russian, Abkhaz forces begin joint military drills

ROSTOV-ON-DON. Oct 15 - The personnel stationed at a military base of Russia's Southern Military District (SMD) in Abkhazia was on alert as part of a two-side battalion tactical exercise held jointly with Abkhazian troops, the SMD said in a statement.

"In the course of the exercise, the soldiers quickly performed munition and inventory loading. Military drivers carried out marches to designated concentration areas on vehicles taken from the armored fighting motor pool. After that, military units embarked on mechanized marches toward areas where the exercise is being held," the SMD's press service reported on Tuesday.

On the exercise's main stages, servicemen will drill tactical elements of combined arms warfare on the offensive and the defensive, including airmobile groups on helicopters, which will conduct operations to swiftly capture and defeat the adversary's remote command posts in mountainous and coastal areas.

In total, up to 1,000 troops are participating in the week-long battalion tactical exercise, with approximately 150 pieces of military and special vehicles involved, including armored vehicles Tigr and communications vehicles Kushetka mounted on BTR-80 armored personnel carriers, the SMD said.
