International IT companies' reluctance to cooperate with security services hindering fight against terrorism - FSB head (Part 2)

SOCHI. Oct 16 (Interfax) - Terrorists continue to coordinate their actions via encrypted messenger services, some of which are out of security services' reach, Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Director Alexander Bortnikov said at the 18th meeting of security and special services chiefs in Sochi on Wednesday.

"Encrypted messenger services remain the key instrument of communication between militants," Bortnikov said.

"Therefore, we view the reluctance of certain leading international IT companies to cooperate with security services in the field of information security as a serious problem," he said.

The threat of terrorist uses of wireless technologies not dependent on mobile and internet service providers is looming, Bortnikov said.

"The growing accessibility of AI technologies which can be used for analyzing big data, including illegally obtained databases, will broaden the capacities of terrorists," he said.
