Terrorist hacker attacks may trigger political, military conflicts between states - FSB head (Part 2)

SOCHI. Oct 16 (Interfax) - International terrorist organizations have cyber divisions capable of embedding malware in critical infrastructure, Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Director Alexander Bortnikov said at the 18th international meeting of security and special services chiefs in Sochi on Wednesday.

"International terrorist organizations are continuing to develop their cyber divisions. The threat of terrorists embedding malware in critical infrastructure for the purpose of causing major emergencies is growing," Bortnikov said.

"Terrorist-controlled hacker communities could pass their attacks off as deliberate hostile actions of a particular state, which is fraught with all-out political and military conflict," he said.

Electronic platforms are also often used to finance terrorist groups, Bortnikov said.

"Shell corporations set up by terrorists legally engage in stock exchange operations and invest in real estate and various economic sectors," he said.

In addition, terrorists are increasingly using "confidential crypto-currencies which, unlike bitcoin and its analogues, guarantee anonymity of transactions," Bortnikov said.
