Peskov rules out communications cutoff to fight phone terrorism

MOSCOW. Oct 25 (Interfax) - Cutting off communications with certain countries in order to fight telephone terrorism is out of the question, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"No one is cutting off any communication. This is just a pet, hypertrophied approach [seen] in information flows sometimes. No one is cutting off any countries just now. That is out of the question," Peskov told journalists, commenting on media reports about possible shutdown of communication with countries accused of telephone terrorism.

The Kremlin is aware of this discussion at various levels, he said.

"We have repeatedly witnessed telephone hooliganism and terrorism, which actually threaten and bring discomfort to the lives of thousands of people," Peskov said.

"This is a major problem. What is obvious is the urgent need to take measures to counter this problem. Everything else, how it's going to be done, is not for me to comment on, but for specialists," he said.

"As far as I understand it, no definite decisions have been made. When they are, expert explanations will be given. In this particular instance, for the presidential administration to comment would be incorrect both from a technical and from a technological point of view."

An initiative was devised at the behest of the Russian Security Council allowing the Federal Security Service to turn off communications with some countries in order to fight telephone terrorism, media reports said earlier.
