Buildup of NATO infrastructure near CIS borders worries CIS members - executive secretary

BAKU. Oct 30 (Interfax) - NATO's growing activities and the buildup of its military infrastructure near the western borders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) alarms the CIS member states, CIS Executive Committee Chairman and Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev said.

"The growing activities and buildup of NATO's military infrastructure in the near vicinity of the CIS western borders is a matter of our special concern," Lebedev said in opening a meeting of the CIS defense ministers.

International relations remain highly prone to conflict, strategic security agreements are being ruined, certain countries are continuing to pursue a policy of diktat, and attempts have been made to deploy weapons in outer space, he said.

The CIS "attaches great importance to developing cooperation and coordinating interaction between the relevant agencies to ensure our national security and also common security of the CIS," Lebedev said.

"This field of integration remains an important factor in maintaining stability of both the member states and the Commonwealth as a whole," he said.
