Admiralty Shipyard lays down 2 Project 636 submarines for Russian Navy

ST. PETERSBURG. Nov 1 (Interfax) - The Admiralty Shipyard on Friday held a keel laying for two Project 636.3 submarines, Ufa and Magadan, an Interfax correspondent reported from the ceremony.

"The submarines will be a contribution to reinforcing Russia's Far Eastern frontiers," the Navy's chief commander Nikolai Yevmenov said at the ceremony.

The third-generation submarine project is a development on Projects to 636 and 877. Project 636.6 submarines are considered to be among the world's least noisy, for which the West dubbed them the "Black hole." Underwater speed: 20 knots, maximum submersion: 300 meters, autonomous sailing: 45 days; crew: 52 members; displacement: about 4,000 tonnes.

It was reported that the project's submarines currently in construction were intended for the Pacific Fleet. In all, the navy is to receive six. The Project 636.3 submarines feature the Kalibr-PL missile weapon system and updated radio electronics.

The series for the Pacific Fleet is due to be completed in 2022.
