CSTO states should jointly combat terrorism - Russia's Volodin

YEREVAN. Nov 5 (Interfax) - Common challenges, above all terrorism, require a joint response from the member countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), including steps to compile a single list of terrorists and draw up relevant model laws, Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said.

"We need to do a great deal in order to be able to resolve these issues, harmonize legislation, and draft model laws in the field of security and the crackdown on common challenges and threats," Volodin said at a meeting with President of the Armenian National Assembly Ararat Mirzoyan on Monday.

"Joint efforts need to be made to respond to common challenges. It is simply impossible to fight terrorism single-handedly. When terrorists have even the smallest escape route to take cover in a country which does not view them as terrorists, it is clear that all this leads to ominous ramifications," he said.

"Our objective today is to do as much as possible to draw up single lists of terrorist organizations and draft model laws," he said.

Mirzoyan, in turn, said that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) offers its member countries "model recommendations on aligning their national legislations."

"As regards bilateral ties, Armenia and Russia are strategic partners, allies, and active members of the Eurasian Economic Union," Mirzoyan said, adding that the two countries have already formed a solid contractual framework for further boosting investment.

At the meeting, Volodin also called for more active visit exchanges between Russian and Armenian parliamentarians, expressing hope that committees of the two countries' parliaments will intensify their work after his meeting with Mirzoyan.

Volodin also held an informal meeting with Kyrgyz Parliament Speaker Dastanbek Jumabekov aboard the plane on his way to Yerevan. They discussed interparliamentary ties and the agenda of the upcoming session of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly.

Volodin has arrived in Yerevan to attend the 12th plenary session of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly on November 5.
