U.S. ambassador meets with ex-Armenian President Sargsyan

YEREVAN. Nov 6 (Interfax) - United States Ambassador to Armenia Lynne Tracy has met with former Armenian President and former Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan, who left his office following a revolution in the spring of 2018.

The meeting was arranged at the U.S. ambassador's request, the Republican Party led by Sargsyan said.

Tracy said at the meeting that she valued the relationships between the U.S. embassy and Armenian political parties, including the Republican Party. The U.S. remains committed to its obligations to facilitate Armenia's democratic, economic and social governance, as it has been over the past 27 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, she said.

Sargsyan shared his vision of the domestic political situation in Armenia with Tracy.

"Armenia's real democratization has no alternative. We have worked toward this for years, simultaneously building relations of a mutually beneficial partnership with the U.S. Real democracy is a response to populism, which has turned into a serious threat to a lot of countries. Our party prioritizes security of Armenia and Artsakh [the Armenian name for Nagorno-Karabakh], regional stability and peace," he said.
