Collapse of JCPOA poses threat of open confrontation in Persian Gulf - Ryabkov

MOSCOW. Nov 8 (Interfax) - The threat of an open confrontation in the Persian Gulf will increase if the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) collapses, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said.

"We call on all remaining parties to the JCPOA to exercise restraint; the agreement must not be tested to the limit, it may fail, collapse, and then we will get a situation where the threat of an open conflict, the threat of further complications in the already explosive region of the Persian Gulf increase," Ryabkov told journalists on Friday.

Russia stands for direct contacts between all the states of the region and believes that there is no alternative to this approach, he said.

"The alternative could be an uncontrollable escalation. This is what we're warning against," Ryabkov said.
