NEW YORK CITY. Nov 8 (Interfax) - The United Nations General Assembly's First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) did not support a draft resolution proposed by Russia on possibly relocating its sessions from New York City to Vienna or Geneva because of the non-issuance of U.S. visas to a number of delegation members, including Russian ones, an Interfax correspondent reported.
The draft resolution titled "Improving the effectiveness of the work of the First Committee" (document A/C.1/74/L.57) proposed by Russia, Syria, Angola, Burundi and Nicaragua was supported by 18 countries, another 69 countries, including the U.S., voted against it, and 72 others abstained.
The draft resolution said that, if visa issues were not resolved by the UN secretary-general within a reasonable and limited period of time, the General Assembly would consider the convention of the First Committee's 2020 session in Geneva or Vienna.
