World powers' rivalry complicates settlement in Syria, Ukraine - Nazarbayev

NUR-SULTAN. Nov 12 (Interfax) - Rivalry between key world powers is putting further strain on the already complex conflict settlement processes in Eurasia, First Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

"The showdown between world powers is automatically spreading to a large number of hotspots in Eurasia, thus complicating the already challenging peaceful settlement process in Syria and Ukraine. And Brexit became a key anti-integration step of late," Nazarbayev said at the 5th meeting of the Astana Club political forum in the Kazakh capital on Tuesday.

Rivalry between global powers "has entered a new level," he said.

"Mutual sanctions and trade wars have become a standard feature in current relations between the United States of America and the People's Republic of China, whereas aggressive rhetoric and economic sanctions have become the main language of communication between the West and Russia," Nazarbayev said.

"The situation is being complicated by the absence of permanent channels of communication, a circumstance that undermines the prospects of restoring strategic stability," he said.
