Belarusian FM urges Merkel to back Zelensky's sincere desire to settle Donbas problem

MINSK. Nov 13 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sincerely wants to settle the conflict in Donbas, Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said.

"We have the impression that Zelensky is sincerely willing to settle this conflict in eastern Ukraine. Therefore, he needs significant support now," Makei said in an interview with the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung, whose text is available on the Belarusian Foreign Ministry website.

Germany should support Zelensky's efforts, he said. "The federal chancellor [Angela Merkel] has been a locomotive of this process [the Minsk process] from the very start. And she could become such again now," Makei said.

On the whole, he said that the negotiating process for settling the conflict in eastern Ukraine in the Minsk format is a successful one.

"I would definitely call it a success. Some substantive decisions were made in February 2015, like a truce, an exchange of prisoners, and a provisional ceasefire. At the same time, not all omissions were corrected. And each party says different things when they have to explain what is happening now. And yet I hope there will soon be an opportunity to hold a new summit in the Normandy format," Makei said.
