Ukrainian FM wants to return to 'Nuland format' in relations with U.S

KYIV. Nov 14 (Interfax) - Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko said he would prefer Ukraine to return to the level of interaction with the United States that existed while former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland was in office in 2013.

"I don't think the presidents coordinate each of their steps on the phone. This is precisely why an official like [former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations] Kurt Volker was chosen to be invested with such powers. There is no such person now. I would like such a person to be appointed. But I actually think that we should return to the format that existed during Victoria Nuland's time, when she had the entire power of the U.S. Department of State behind her," Prystaiko said in an interview with the BBC News Ukrainian.

Volker's appointment was an indicator of a lower level of interaction between the U.S. and Ukraine, Prystaiko said.

"He was not a Department of State official, he had no office working for him, and he could not be engaged in all of the existing processes," he said.
