U.S. withdrawal from open skies treaty would affect security - Russian diplomat

BERLIN. Nov 27 (Interfax) - The security situation will get complicated if the United States quits the Treaty on Open Skies, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said.

"If the U.S. decides to pull out of this treaty, this would be very bad for security," Grushko told journalists in Berlin on Tuesday.

The treaty was signed by 23 members of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in Helsinki on March 24, 1992. Russia ratified the treaty on May 26, 2001. Currently, the treaty is comprised of 34 member states. The treaty allows them to fly over each other's territory to monitor military activity.

Last month it emerged that the White House was considering withdrawing from the treaty.
