Russian diplomat expects hard talk at next Vienna meeting on Iran nuclear problem

MOSCOW. Nov 27 (Interfax) - Russia has confirmed plans to hold the next meeting of the Joint Commission of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding the Iranian nuclear problem in Vienna in early December.

"The next meeting of Joint Commission on JCPOA will take place in Vienna on 6 December. Another round of difficult discussions can be expected in the light of deteriorating situation around Nuclear Deal," Russian Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said on Twitter.

A communique posted in Brussels on Tuesday said that Secretary General of the European External Action Service Helga Schmid would be presiding at the JCPOA Joint Commission's meeting on the level of political directors.

The meeting will be attended by representatives of the E3 (the UK, Germany, and France), as well as China, Russia, and Iran, the communique said.

The commission held its previous meeting on the level of foreign ministers during the UN General Assembly session in New York in September.

The JCPOA was approved by six international intermediaries (five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany), as well as Iran in July 2015.

The United States quit the JCPOA and reinstated anti-Iranian sanctions on May 8, 2018.

Exactly one year later, Iran started to gradually reduce the scope of its JCPOA obligations and said that would be done until the European parties to the deal ensure exports of Iranian oil and oil revenue of Tehran amid the U.S. sanctions.

Iran has reduced the scale of its JCPOA obligations four times now.
