Russia, Turkey begin 13th joint patrolling mission in northern Syria - Russian Defense Ministry

MOSCOW. Dec 3 (Interfax) - Russian military police and the Turkish Armed Forces began the 13th joint patrolling mission in a border area several kilometers east of the Syrian city of Kobane at 10:15 a.m. Moscow time, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement seen by Interfax.

"The joint patrol started at the Gharib customs checkpoint, where Russian military police and Turkish army servicemen specified the patrol route, which goes east along the Syrian-Turkish border," the statement said.

Helicopters of the Russian Aerospace Forces' Army Aviation are providing aerial patrolling of the area, it said.

"The patrol checks the situation in Syrian populated localities on its way," the statement said.

The joint patrol comprises eight military vehicles, Tigr and Taifun armored vehicles of Russian military police and Kirpi armored vehicles of the Turkish army, as well as 50 servicemen of both countries.

An Orlan-10 drone of the Russian Armed Forces is monitoring the patrol in the real-time mode, the statement said.

The joint patrols were launched consistent with the Russian-Turkish memorandum signed in Sochi on October 22, 2019.

Russian military police acting jointly with the Syrian and Turkish border services are helping ensure security of the civilian population and maintain law and order, as well as are controlling the implementation of the memorandum's provisions on the pullout of Kurdish militia and its weapons 30 kilometers from the border.
