MOSCOW. Dec 6 (Interfax) - The multirole nuclear submarine Kazan of Project 885M Yasen-M, has test-fired torpedoes at a Northern Fleet training range in the White Sea, Northern Fleet spokesman Vadim Serga said.
"The test firing was carried out as part of the manufacturer's sea trials with the support from White Sea Naval Base forces. The Kazan sub crew launched two torpedoes from an underwater position against an underwater target," Serga said.
The preliminary estimate is the test was a success, he said. Very soon the submarine will be back in the White Sea for a few more tests of weapon systems, the spokesman said.
In October, Alexei Rakhmanov, president of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), said that the new submarine's commissioning date had to be postponed due to problems that arose during its testing.
Yasen-M multirole nuclear submarines are armed with Oniks and/or Kalibr cruise missiles. The Kazan submarine, which is the lead ship of the project, is due to be handed over to the navy by the end of this year.
