New shooting incident occurs on Kyrgyz-Tajik border

BISHKEK. Jan 13 (Interfax) - A shooting incident has occurred to the Kyrgyz-Tajik border again, the Tajik State Border Service told Interfax on Saturday.

"Overnight, law enforcers ensured order in border areas and along the patrol routes of the border detachments. Shots, presumably fired from a hunting rifle, were periodically heard from the side of Tajikistan throughout the night. The situation on the Kyrgyz-Tajik section of the state border was described as stable," the service said.

"In addition, Tajik citizens threw stones at a Volvo truck owned by a Kyrgyz citizen, breaking its windshield panel, in the Tort-Kocho area of the Batken district in the Batken region at night," the State Border Service said.

Border guard detachments deployed to the Batken region continue performing their duties on alert.

According to the Kyrgyz side, in the early hours of January 10, unknown individuals had hurled stones at cars belonging to Kyrgyz citizens in the Batken region of Kyrgyzstan and then escaped to Tajikistan. According to Kyrgyz law enforcement agencies, several people were injured in the incident.

Later, Tajik citizens threw stones at the house of a Kyrgyz citizen in the Dakhma area. Shortly afterward, border guards and law enforcement officers on their way to the house came under fire by small-caliber hunting rifles from Tajik territory.

After the incident, Kyrgyz authorities evacuated 254 people, including 139 children, from Dakhma.
