Abkhazian parliament accepts President Khadjimba's resignation

SUKHUM. Jan 13 (Interfax) - The Abkhazian parliament accepted the resignation of President Raul Khadjimba at a special meeting on Monday, an Interfax correspondent said in a report.

The meeting was attended by 34 out of 35 parliament members. The resignation was accepted by 32 votes to two.

Khadjimba declared his resignation on January 12 under pressure from the opposition, whose leaders refused to recognize the results of the second round of the Abkhazian presidential election held in fall 2019.

Khadjimba submitted his resignation statement to the Abkhazian parliament and said he was resigning "for the sake of peace and stability in the country."
