Georgian Intelligence Service chief says plans to resign

TBILISI. Jan 28 (Interfax) - Georgian Intelligence Service chief Levan Izoria has said he plans to resign.

Speaking in an interview shown by the Georgian TV company POSTV on Monday, Izoria said he had tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. He said he had made this decision in December 2019 and expected to continue his government service as Georgia's ambassador to Germany.

Izoria was appointed Intelligence Service chief in September 2019. Before this, he had served as defense minister.

In November 2019, the prime minister also appointed Izoria National Security Council secretary.

Izoria did not say who might head up the Intelligence Service following his resignation.

Before Izoria's appointment in September 2019, the Intelligence Service was led by David Sujashvili.
