Two suspected of plotting terror attack in Kazakhstan arrested in Almaty - security committee

NUR-SULTAN. Feb 18 (Interfax) - Two adherents of a destructive religious movement were detained in a police operation in Almaty and have been remanded in custody by a court, the press service for Kazakhstan's National Security Committee said in a statement on Tuesday.

An improvised explosive device filled with shrapnel, spare parts, cold steel arms, and smartphones containing photos and videos of their potential targets were seized from the suspects' place of residence, the statement said.

"Criminal cases have been opened on counts of plotting an act of terrorism and terrorist propaganda," it said.

According to investigators, the two plotted to stage terrorist attacks in Kazakh territory, including in crowded places, the statement said.

"The investigation is continuing," it said.
