MOSCOW. April 14 (Interfax) - Sukhoi Su-35 fighter aircraft performed group flights, dogfights and "hostile" aircraft interception in Karelia, the Western Military District press service said.
"In the framework of carrying out flights, Su-35S multirole supermaneuverable 4++ generation fighter crews practiced joint interception and engaging mock enemy aircraft at the supersonic speed," the press service said.
Pilots from the district's air force and air defense base in Leningrad region used an aerodrome in Petrozavodsk, Karelia, it said.
"The main purpose of the flights was to raise the effectiveness of operative-tactical air crews in task execution," the press service said.
The flights were made in complicated weather conditions, it said.
The Sukhoi Su-35 was designed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau. The plane's distinctive features include a new avionics system equipped with digital computers and a new phased array radar with a long aerial target detection range and an increased number of simultaneously tracked and engaged targets. It also has increased-thrust engines and thrust-vectoring technology.
Experts' estimates suggest that the Su-35 has far more improved flying and technical characteristics as compared with similar aircraft, while the Su-35's onboard equipment allows it to tackle a wider range of missions in line with its tactical and technical tasks. The plane's potential features will allow it to outperform all tactical fighter jets of the 4 and 4+ generations of the Rafale and EF 2000 type and fighter jets of the F-15, F-16, F-18 and F-35 type, as well as counter the F-22A plane.
