MOSCOW. June 1 (Interfax) - The activities of the United States in the vicinity of the Russian border jeopardize the current security system in Europe, head of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi said at a press briefing.
"A considerable rise in NATO's military activity near our borders has been noted in light of the Americans' possible withdrawal from the Treaty on Open Skies and Washington's earlier steps to ruin the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty," Rudskoi said.
"By such actions, the United States and its allies, using the unsubstantiated threat of 'Russian aggression' as an excuse, are continuing to shatter the existing system of security in Europe," he said.
Apart from an increase in the number of NATO planes flying in the vicinity of the Russian border, work is continuing to enhance missile defense infrastructure in Poland, in addition to a U.S. facility deployed in Romania, Rudskoi said.
"All concerns related to the possible deployment of Tomahawk cruise missiles to these bases persist," he said.
