Russian air defense units repel mock attack on S-300PS firing positions at drills in Tajikistan

YEKATERINBURG. June 4 (Interfax) - Servicemen operating a Russian S-300PS air defense missile system, currently on a trial run in Tajikistan, repelled an attack staged by a mock enemy sabotage and reconnaissance group on firing positions, the press service of Russia's Central Military District said on Thursday.

"After being alerted about the attack, counterterrorism and reinforcement units set off for the site. During a subsequent simulated battle, personnel eliminated the 'saboteurs'. Focus was on coordination of the units' actions while repelling the attack simultaneously from several directions," it said.

Steps to create a realistic battlefield environment involved simulating a situation where mock enemy sabotage groups attacked the systems' firing positions simultaneously from several directions in order to thwart plans to destroy the missiles, the press service said.

"The servicemen practiced steps to repel an attack and passed a test which focused on organizing defense and waging a battle with the use of standard weapons. The units, for their part, practiced detecting, identifying, giving target assignments, and escorting mock enemy airborne targets. They carried out electronic launches, destroying all mock enemy airborne targets," it said.
