Roscosmos suggests adopting resolution to prevent arms race in outer space

MOSCOW. June 18 (Interfax) - Roscosmos condemns a defense space strategy developed by the Pentagon and suggests passing a resolution on preventing an arms race in outer space, deputy general director of the Russian State Space Corporation Sergei Savelyev said.

"We've consistently been speaking at all possible and available negotiating platforms, to which the Disarmament Conference also belongs, among others, in favor of adopting a resolution to prevent an arms race in outer space," the corporation's press service quoted Savelyev as saying.

"Statements that Russia is going to place weapons in outer space directed against the U.S. cause our extreme concern," he said.

Pentagon chief Mark Esper said on Wednesday, when commenting on the Defense Space Strategy developed by the U.S. that "our adversaries have made space a warfighting domain and we have to implement enterprise-wide changes to policies, strategies, operations, investments, capabilities, and expertise for this new strategic environment."

Russia stands ready to further broaden cooperation with the U.S. in space exploration, Savelyev said.

"Naturally, in such issues we're guided by the principle of reciprocity and equality. The militarization of outer space with our American partners subsequently assuming dominating positions could disrupt the already fragile structure of relations between the two countries in this field," he said.
