Defense appeals Safronov's arrest

MOSCOW. July 8 (Interfax) - The defense team for Ivan Safronov, an advisor to the CEO of Roscosmos, has appealed his pretrial arrest in a case concerning high treason, Safronov's lawyer Ivan Pavlov, leader of the human rights association Komanda 29 (Team 29), told Interfax.

"My colleague Yevgeny Smirnov and I have filed an appeal against the Lefortovsky District Court's ruling on Safronov's arrest," Pavlov said on Wednesday.

The defense sees the court's ruling as unlawful and unwarranted and is asking a higher court to reverse it, he said.

"We saw neither reasons for choosing such a harsh restrictive measure for Ivan, nor evidence proving his responsibility for the crime in the case filings presented by the investigation. We talked about this in court yesterday, and we'll talk about this in the appeals court," Pavlov said.

A date will be set later for a hearing at the Moscow City Court.
