Lukashenko fears opposition could dispose of his supporters if they come to power in Belarus

MINSK. Sept 1 (Interfax) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko believes that his opponents could unleash a massacre if they come to power in the country.

"This is what worries me most of all. It's not power, as some people in Russia are saying: 'Lukashenko is clinging to power for dear life!' I don't want them to cut my country into pieces, which I built on the ruins of an empire, and I don't want them to slaughter the honest, decent people who worked for this. Contrary to what some people are saying, this won't be a cleansing. Rather, it'll be a massacre. And what occurred in Ukraine will look like just a minor problem in comparison," the Belarusian state-run news agency BelTA quoted Lukashenko as saying during a visit to Baranovichi on Tuesday.
