NEW YORK. Sept 18 (Interfax) - Russia's Permanent Representative Vasily Nebenzya and his United States counterpart Kelly Craft have disagreed over the ceasefire situation in Syria.
"We hear our Western colleagues calling for the ceasefire across the whole of Syria. They should clarify what they mean," Nebenzya said at a UN Security Council meeting on Friday.
"First of all, the ceasefire is working. Secondly, with whom would we now sign such agreements?" he asked. At present, only terrorists carry out attacks in Syria, he said.
Craft, who spoke after Nebenzya, noted that, from her country's perspective, the ceasefire in Syria was still not working. A ceasefire across the whole of Syria was key to lasting peace but this had yet to be achieved, she said.
Earlier at the meeting, UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said that the overall situation in the country had become more stable. He admitted that there were occasional armed clashes and that Islamic State (banned in Russia) terrorists were still operating in sparsely-populated areas of Syria.
