Azerbaijani FM accuses Armenia of escalating tensions in Nagorno-Karabakh

BAKU. Oct 2 (Interfax) - Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov placed the responsibility for the latest escalation of tensions on the contact line in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone on Armenia during a phone conversation with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

"The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and France held a telephone conversation. Jean-Yves Le Drian expressed serious concern over the tensions in the region and noted the importance of defusing the tensions and of observing a ceasefire. In this context, he noted the statement of the leaders of the countries co-chairing the OCE Minsk Group," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

Bayramov, in turn, said that the responsibility for the escalation in the region rests entirely with the military-political leadership of Armenia.

"The foreign minister of Azerbaijan stressed that the Azerbaijani side undertook a counterattack in response to another military provocation from Armenia on September 27. The minister also accused Armenia of violating international humanitarian law and of strikes on the civilian population that have resulted in civilian fatalities," the ministry said.
