Uzbekistan limits entry from Kyrgyz territory following unrest in Bishkek

BISHKEK. Oct 6 (Interfax) - The Kyrgyz State Border Service has said that the situation on the country's border is stable and the border continues to operate amid increased security measures introduced in the run-up to the October 4 parliamentary election.

"The department of public relations and media contacts of the State Border Service of the Kyrgyz Republic reports that the situation on the state border is stable. Units guarding the state border were put on high alert back at 8:00 p.m. on September 24," its press service told Interfax.

"The Uzbek side limited entry to the Republic of Uzbekistan of citizens of Kyrgyzstan and third countries from 00:01 a.m. on October 6. At the same time, citizens of Kyrgyzstan currently in Uzbek territory can exit the country and citizens of Uzbekistan currently in the territory of Kyrgyzstan can enter Uzbekistan. Cargo traffic is continuing without any restrictions," it said.

Large-scale protests over the results of the parliamentary election broke out in Bishkek on Monday.
