No one would benefit from Karabakh war if terrorist militants join it - Duma deputy

MOSCOW. Oct 6 (Interfax) - The involvement of militants from terrorist groups in the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh is dangerous to all countries surrounding the warzone, Russian State Duma Defense Committee deputy head Yury Shvytkin said.

"Terrorist groups take advantage of all such conflicts to their benefit. Azerbaijan and Armenia should see once again that there will be no victors in this war," Shvytkin told Interfax on Tuesday.

"Militants are interested in fueling a conflict in the South Caucasus and near our border," he said.

"I think we should take certain measures within the UN General Assembly framework, particularly to compel Turkey to assume a constructive position," he said.

Shvytkin called for engaging peacekeepers in settling the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, admitting that "this requires Armenia's and Azerbaijan's mutual consent."

"I think there could be peacekeepers not only from Russia but also from other countries there," he said.

Shvytkin said he was "cautiously optimistic" about the likelihood that Armenia and Azerbaijan could agree on the deployment of peacekeepers to the conflict zone.
