Local intruders occupy gold, copper, coal mines in Kyrgyzstan amid public unrest in the country

BISHKEK. Oct 6 (Interfax) - Unknown individuals have seized several Kyrgyz deposits, as mining operations are being suspended, local media reported on Tuesday.

Unknown people have seized the Kara-Keche coal mine in the Naryn region. The heating season is under the threat of disruption, as coal produced there goes to the Bishkek thermal power plant and to the population, Kyrgyz media said.

Local residents have attempted to take several employees of the Jalal-Abad region's Zhamgyr gold mine hostage and threatened to kill them. Most workers managed to flee.

Local residents have occupied Ishtamberdy, another gold mine, which is being developed by China's Full Gold Mining. Approximately 300-400 people have invaded its territory, according to local media.

The Bozymchak copper mine in the Jalal-Abad region has suspended operations. Local residents seized two crew change buseswhen they were on their way from the deposit. The fate of workers remains unknown.

Alliance Altyn LLC said earlier that it had suspended works at the Jeruy deposit in reaction to an unauthorized entry by some trespassers into its production site Jeruy, a restricted access facility.

Presently, Kyrgyzstan is engulfed in the public disorders that began on October 5 after the opposition refused to accept the results of a general parliamentary election.
